BABY’S FIRST DAY HOME
BABY’S FIRST DAY HOME
We live in the UK, and if everything is alright with the mother and the baby, they can go home after 24 hours or even less.
With Alessia, we spent the morning doing vaccines and tests and weighing and learning how to wash her, to change her, any concerns we might have. You know the drill.
After all that was done, we were free to go home. We were so excited to take our little girl home and see how Cookie the beagle reacts to her. We didn’t know what to expect; Cookie is a fantastic dog, but, at that time, she was barely one year old, running and jumping like a kangaroo.
We reached home, got in; Cookie was soo excited to see us come home. She had been boarding for three nights, and it was her first time away from us. She started to jump on me, sniffing every inch of my body. During this time, Alessia was with Bryan outside. Then they got in; I took my newborn, and Cookie started to play with Bryan.
All of a sudden, she runs upstairs, and we follow her. We bring the baby, turn on the camera, and with our hearts in the pit of our stomachs, we lowered her down so Cookie could get to smell her.
I mean, she’s a dog, a hound, I’m sure she was able to tell I was pregnant the first time we met, but she was still a boisterous young puppy.
THE MEET AND GREET
To our complete surprise, she was afraid of Alessia; her tail went in between her legs, took a little sniff, and ran away. She was going to great lengths to avoid Alessia. I’d say it took her about a week to get used to her little sister, and slowly slowly started sleeping in bed with us again. She then started to get closer, and at some point, she was sleeping right next to our little one.
I could see she cared about our baby; she grew fond of her. She was even bringing her toys to play with. However, Cookie was still boisterous, jumping in bed and playing with Alessia. It took her a long time to understand that she needed to be a bit more careful around the baby, but soon enough, she wasn’t jumping anymore.
Now that Alessia is one year old, crawling and walking, Cookie is her absolute best friend. They love each other to death, are almost always near each other, and we are so happy about it. The first meeting may have been disappointing, but everything afterward has been a dream.
